Dkaika is located at the extreme south of the Hebron Governorate, at the border with the green line separating West Bank and Israel. The residents are about 220 persons, of which 50% men and 50% women. The nearest village is Kaabneh at about 4 km of non asphalted road.
The access to the community is particularly tough in winter time, and need a 4×4 car.
The village, as other in area C, is under threat of force displacement, and in the last year many shelters received demolition order .
The local school has about 50 children (25 girls + 25 boys) (6 classes) and together with the whole community is under risk of displacement. The 6th class was demolished about 2 years ago, and substituted with a non permanent caravan, presenting many problem of water infiltration an instability. The legal case is followed by lawyer Kamar Effad, supported by Rabbis for Human Rights. The present intervention as been coordinated with the legal parts.

The project is addressing the needs trough the promotion of rehabilitation intervention of low environmental impact in the primary school.

In particular VdT will promote trough a bio-climatic architectural method the rehabilitation actions that will afford the following specific problems:
Winter rainfall damaged the 6th class (caravan) and caused infiltration in the other 5 classrooms. The school does not have a full functioning electrical system, and the open air area is not safe and dangerous for the children (irregular land with construction materials around, an unprotected wheel in the middle of the open air space, old and not functioning toilettes to be removed).
The project will secure and rehabilitate the caused damages, fix and secure the open air space, fully reactivate the electrical systems .

The project will be implemented with particular attention towards gender mainstreaming. Both female and male teachers and school staff were consulted by Vento di Terra during the needs assessments. Specific attention is especially given to the different needs of boys and girls. The rehabilitation work will also take in consideration the necessity to guarantee the access to disabled students. The rehabilitation will assure safe and healthy conditions, and instruments to implement the primary education path for boys and girls and to guarantee the right of a safe and healthy working place for the men and women school staff.
The techniques adopted during the architectural works will follow the bio-climatic method already implemented by VdT, guaranteeing a continuity with what already done in Khan al Ahmar, Wadi Abu Hindi and Yanoun and introducing the techniques in Dkaika school, with a maximum level of attention to thermal and insulation condition of the structures, using of clean and cheap energies, using of recycle materials.
